Action & Fighting Games
Virtua Fighter brought polygonal 3D fighters to arcades in 1993 and showed that readable martial-arts animation could work without 2D sprites. The design side has its own twist: Fighting games turn distance into vocabulary. The same button can be brilliant, useless or suicidal depending on whether the opponent is one step closer. The corner of a fighting arena contains no furniture and somehow still feels crowded.

Before the next game
Karate Champ, released in the 1980s, helped establish one-on-one martial-arts videogames before the fighting genre had settled on the control conventions players know today. Another rabbit hole starts here. Street Fighter II exploded in popularity in 1991 and helped define the modern competitive fighting-game template: distinct characters, special moves, combos and head-to-head rounds.
