Bonus fruit, ships, bells and other strange objects became score bait because a rare target gives players a reason to break their safe routine. Put that beside this bit of history: Dragon's Lair used LaserDisc animation in 1983, trading free movement for spectacular cartoon visuals far beyond what ordinary arcade hardware could draw in real time. Classic games have tiny rulebooks and enormous opinions about timing.

Odd but true
Arcade cabinets charged for attempts, so designers had a financial reason to make games easy to understand but difficult to master. Confusion was bad; challenge was profitable. The next bit is equally fun: Ms. Pac-Man introduced new mazes and more varied ghost behavior, helping prove that a sequel could meaningfully remix an arcade formula rather than merely repeat it.
