Defender made horizontal scrolling central to its 1981 action, forcing players to think about danger beyond a single fixed screen. There is a practical reason this matters in games. Classic arcade games often explain themselves through motion: enemies approach, objects fall, and the player's first mistake teaches the goal faster than a manual could. A continue screen is thirty seconds of negotiation between pride, curiosity and another coin.

Something to tell a friend
Pong was released by Atari in 1972 and became one of the first major arcade videogame hits. Its entire world is two paddles, one ball and the dangerous discovery that simple rules can eat an afternoon. A second detour: Asteroids also used vector graphics, which gave its rocks and ships razor-sharp outlines on black. The minimalist look was partly technology and partly instant visual identity.
