Management & Simulation Games · 3
RollerCoaster Tycoon arrived in 1999 and is famous for having much of its original code written by Chris Sawyer in assembly language. The design side has its own twist: Automation feels powerful because it converts repeated attention into infrastructure, freeing the player to solve a larger problem instead of clicking the same one forever. A simulation's most dangerous button is often the one that makes time run faster.

One for quiz night
SimCity arrived in 1989 without a conventional win condition. Instead of defeating a final boss, players built a city and dealt with the consequences—traffic, budgets, disasters and all. The next fact has its own story: The Sims was released in 2000 and made ordinary domestic life into a sandbox. Eating, sleeping, decorating and socializing became game systems, which sounded strange until millions of players tried it.
