Quake pushed first-person action into fully polygonal 3D worlds in the mid-1990s and became enormously influential for networked PC play. There is one more layer to consider. Respawn timers are social pacing tools in multiplayer: too short and mistakes feel meaningless; too long and the punishment becomes watching everyone else have fun. Nothing improves map knowledge like repeatedly discovering the same ambush from the victim's side.

Tiny fact jackpot
Spacewar!, created in 1962, is one of the earliest influential computer games built around aiming and firing. Two tiny spacecraft duel around a star whose gravity constantly bends their paths. And for something completely different: Early arcade shooting galleries predate video games by decades. Mechanical targets, light sensors and carnival-style ranges already turned accuracy into entertainment long before pixels arrived.
