A choke point is powerful because geometry reduces how many units can fight at once, allowing a smaller force to make the map do part of the defending. That connects nicely with a historical detail. Fog of war is a strategy mechanic built around ignorance: the map exists, but reliable information has to be earned and can immediately become outdated. The map has no sympathy for a beautiful plan placed three tiles too far left.

Curiosity break
Resource scarcity is a strategy designer’s best friend. If everything is affordable, choices are easy; if only one upgrade can be bought, the purchase suddenly becomes a plan. Then comes this: The term 'zugzwang' in chess describes a position where having to move is itself a disadvantage. It is the rare strategy situation where doing nothing would be better—if the rules allowed it.
